Cheyenne County Fair 2026 | Capturing the Heart of the Livestock Shows
There is something special about fair week in Sidney, Nebraska.
The Cheyenne County Fair isn't just about the lights, the rodeo, the grandstands, or everything happening around the fairgrounds. For so many families, the heart of the week is found inside the livestock pavilion — where months of hard work, early mornings, long days, and dedication finally come together.
This year, I had the opportunity to photograph **all of the livestock shows at the 2026 Cheyenne County Fair**, and I am so grateful I got to be there to document it all. From the first animals entering the ring to the final showmanship moments, there were so many stories happening in front of my camera.
More Than Just a Show
If you've never been involved in showing livestock, it's easy to look at a show ring and see only the few minutes an exhibitor spends in front of the judge. But those few minutes represent so much more. They represent the mornings spent feeding and caring for an animal. The hours spent fitting and preparing. The lessons learned when things don't go according to plan. The nerves before walking into the ring. The confidence that comes from knowing you've put in the work.
And behind every exhibitor is a family, mentor, friend, or community member who helped make it possible.
That's what I wanted my photographs to capture.
Not just the ribbons.
Not just the posed show-ring photos.
Every species brought its own personality — and every exhibitor brought their own story.
There were moments of excitement, moments of nerves, moments of frustration, and plenty of smiles.
There were kids who walked into the ring looking completely confident and others who were clearly fighting through their nerves.
There were animals that didn't cooperate.
There were unexpected wins.
There were disappointments.
There were proud parents watching from the sidelines.
And there were so many moments where you could see just how much these kids care about what they've worked so hard to accomplish.
Showmanship Is About More Than Winning
One of the things I love most about photographing livestock shows is watching the exhibitors grow throughout the process.
Showmanship isn't simply about having the best animal.
It's about how an exhibitor handles themselves, how they work with their animal, how they respond when something goes wrong, and how much they've learned along the way.
Watching these young people step into the ring, take responsibility for their animals, and give it their best is something worth celebrating.
And those are the memories I hope these photographs preserve for them and their families.
A Week Worth Remembering
Thank you for allowing me into the barns, the show ring, the chaos, the excitement, and all the little moments in between.
Years from now, these kids may not remember every placing or every class.
But they'll have photographs that remind them of the animals they worked so hard for, the friends they made, the people who supported them, and the version of themselves who proudly stepped into that show ring.
That is why I love photographing the fair.
Because it's not just about taking pictures.
It's about preserving a piece of their story.
And I am so grateful I got to preserve a little piece of the **2026 Cheyenne County Fair in Sidney, Nebraska.
