A Couples Session at Besler’s Cadillac Ranch | Belle Fourche, South Dakota
There are some places that simply make photographing a couple feel effortless. Besler’s Cadillac Ranch, just outside Belle Fourche in the Black Hills of South Dakota, is one of those places.
For this couples session, we had the kind of setting that makes it easy to slow down, explore, and simply let two people be themselves in front of the camera. With wide-open land, beautiful trees, the Red Water River, and the rustic character of the ranch all around us, there was no shortage of places to create something beautiful.
Just the Two of Them
One of my favorite things about couples sessions is that they don't have to feel overly posed. The best photographs usually happen in the moments between the poses — when they are laughing, walking together, pulling each other close, or simply forgetting that the camera is there.
That's exactly what I wanted for this session. Rather than rushing from one location to the next, we took our time and let the setting become part of their story.
A Little Rustic, A Little Wild
There is something about a ranch setting that brings a completely different feeling to photographs.
The combination of the natural landscape and the rustic details at Besler's Cadillac Ranch gives couples so much variety. One minute you're surrounded by trees and greenery, and the next you're taking in the open landscape and the quiet beauty of the river.
The ranch sits along the Red Water River and encompasses more than a thousand acres, so it has that feeling of being tucked away from everything while still being close to Belle Fourche and the Northern Hills.
And honestly, that quiet feeling is part of what makes a couples session here so special.
The Little Moments Are Everything
Some of my favorite images from this session weren't necessarily the ones where everything was perfectly posed.
They were the little moments.
The way they looked at each other.
The laughs that happened naturally.
The way they held onto each other while walking.
The quiet moments when they were simply enjoying being together.
Those are the photographs that feel real.
Years from now, I want couples to look back at their images and remember **how they felt**, not just what they looked like.
